…and Democrats wonder why they keep losing elections

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY, has introduced a bill that would reinstate the draft. Both men and women, whether or not they are in college, could be drafted. Is he trying to hand the Republicans a victory in November (not that the pachyderm would complain about such a thing, mind you)? Let’s go over some issues with Mr. Rangel’s modest proposal.

1. Feminism or not, Mulan or not, no American dad wants his little girl going off to war. This is why the Equal Rights Amendment failed, people! We didn’t want it when it gave us Constitutional rights; we sure as hell aren’t going to take it when it requires us on the front lines, fighting religious whack jobs in a desert, without Constitutional rights, just so some wealthy politician from New York can be a friend of the working man.

The pachyderm is quite the feminist herself, but does not find drafting women to be defensible or sane policy. Y’all keep telling us that we aren’t strong enough or tough enough to be cops and firefighters and pro athletes – so fight the wars without us. The pachyderm is also just waiting for the inevitable pregnancy issues. Are those liberals going to send a lady, pregnant out to here, into Iraq to waddle around the desert with a machine gun? Court-ordered abortions for girls who get knocked up to avoid service? (Wait — the loony left may actually latch onto that idea.) Handing women their deployment papers while they lie on the delivery table? Finally, the political winner – leaving little babies without mommies. The country throws a fit whenever some little tyke doesn’t remember Daddy because he died in the war. The party that sends breast-feeding mommies into combat isn’t going to see the inside of the House, the Senate, or the White House for another few decades.

2. Since 9/11, the troops are socio-economically diverse. Yes, there are rich people with a conscience. Go figure. If you want to increase the socio-economic diversity of the soldiers, then make the army and the navy more attractive for the wealthy. If you want to increase the proportion of wealthy kids in the draft, then the draft has to differentially select wealthy youngsters; a completely random sample will not place an extra burden on those who have not been pulling their weight.

3. The pachyderm finds it hard to believe that anyone would want the draft used punitively; as a country that can hardly agree about the death penalty for rapists and murderers, why would we want to punish nice kids by sending them to war?

“I truly believe that those who make the decision and those who support the United States going into war would feel more readily the pain that’s involved, the sacrifice that’s involved, if they thought that the fighting force would include the affluent and those who historically have avoided this great responsibility,” Rangel said.
Riiight. So they are going to draft Ashlee Simpson because not enough Hollywood ninnies are voluntarily entering the war? How crazy is that? The only thing that is crazier is that these people expect that ordering debutantes to go to war will be a winner of a campaign platform.

  1. Yeah, there is something desperately wrong with any culture that would send its young women–mothers and potential mothers–to fight its wars. But it’s an inevitable that such a cry would emerge from the emasculated Left. Hiding behind girls, that’s libs for ya. Hey, kind of reminds me of certain “peaceful farmers” we’re fighting right now . . .
