Cheering for Equality

Parents have sued school districts to force them to send cheerleaders to girls’ athletic games.  Under Title IX, schools that receive federal funding are prohibited from engaging in gender discrimination, either academically or in athletics.  This has aroused the ire of parents who missed that episode of Sesame Street where other people have feelings, too.  Complaints center around the fact that cheerleaders are no longer sent to boys’ away games, so they can have time in their schedules to cheer for the girls.  “Boys’ basketball boosters say something is missing in the stands at away games….”  Well, yeah.  Substitute “girls” for “boys,” and remove “away,” and voila! – you understand why girls protested the status quo.
