Scooter Libby’s Trial to Begin

The Valerie Plame nonsense just keeps rolling in. First, we learned that Ms. Plame is not a covert agent who sent Wilson on a mission; she’s a CIA agent whose husband went on a sightseeing jaunt and never wrote up a report. Next, we learned that Richard Armitage was the one who “leaked” Valerie Plame’s identity. Of course, this means that Scooter Libby should stand trial and face 30 years in jail and $1.25 million in fines, right? Federal prosecutors say yes. “Libby, 56, has not been accused of the leak itself. He has been charged with two counts of making false statements to FBI officers, two counts of perjury before a grand jury and one count of obstructing justice.”

“Perjury” and “obstructing justice” amount to an incorrect recollection about the chain of junior-high school gossip. Quite ironic: there is no underlying crime, and, even if there is, Richard Armitage is not standing trial for it.
