Merck Ends Lobbying for Gardasil

After facing a storm of criticism, Merck has stopped lobbying states to mandate that young girls receive its STD/cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil. Conservatives oppose the vaccine because they believe that it encourages promiscuitity; this blogger has opposed mandating it because it presumes that girls will have sex long before the age of majority, when they could seek the vaccine on their own. Furthermore, it is hardly the public health threat that polio, TB, or pertussis is, where an outbreak would force a school to close down. Texas has required that middle school girls be vaccinated; proposals are pending in twenty other states and in DC. While Merck is no longer lobbying, nearly half of the middle school girls in the US may be required to get the shot.

The pachyderm hopes that politicians will realise that a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer is a good thing for women’s health, but that does not translate into a law mandating its use. Eating soy and taking the Pill prevent breast cancer and pregnancy – and it will be a frightening day when the government mandates that girls not be sent to school in the morning without their daily dose of oestrogen and tofu.

  1. It’s convenient of them to stop now, isn’t it? After all, the damage has been done. There are stories which trickle down and make me thankful that I am not building any people right now.

  2. Very convenient timing indeed. You said it better than I did!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. :)

  3. Gosh, the power of the lobbyist is amazing!

  4. Frightening, isn’t it?
